He'll Take Care of You
I have fuzzy memories of dancing around and singing in to an imaginary microphone when I was eight or nine years old. These fuzzy memories only add to the large body of evidence that kids are just plain out weird. It's not just me right? Right? Right. Being that I was so young, I guess I've been enjoying music for a long long time now.
I remember on one such occasion listening to David Meece's "Everybody Needs A Little Help". It's a very high energy, disco and soft rock album, suited for small children to dance around to while singing into an imagery microphone. I've heard somewhere that that has happened before.
However, it wasn't until I was older that I realize there was an amazing gem of a song tucked away at the end of the album after all the energy was spent and it was time to settle down for the night.
"He'll Take Care of You" is a simple lullaby with a simple melody. Over the years this song has become one of my favorites. Beyond the simplicity is a rich texture that holds through the many stages of life.
When my children were young, "He'll take care of you" meant that God would be with them throughout the night. No need to worry or be scared. As my children have grown older, it means that God will be with you in your travels. In your growing. In your growing into being the men you are meant to be. My eldest son recently flew off to college. "He'll take care of you" in this new chapter of life you are entering. Perhaps "He'll take care of you" as you find a wife and have children of your own. Time moves on.
As parents we do what we can. We don't always know the best approach. We're not even sure we're doing it right, whatever right is. To me, this song says something very important in between the lines of the chorus. Child, God is with you always, but especially when I can't be.
When I can't be with you at night, God is. When I can't be with you as you grow older and apart from me, God is there. When you zoom off to college with eyes wide open, God is there to watch over you because I can't. At the end, He will still be here to shine a light on your path because my light has gone out.
As a father I don't know if I've always done it right, but I have had two goals for my children. The first is to teach them how to learn. To think critically. The second is to point them to God.
And now on to you, reader. He is faithful, and will take care of you throughout your life, even when the wind is strong.
He'll Take Care of you (Chorus)
He’ll take care of you, my darling, he loves you
He’ll take care of you, my darling, for me
He’ll take care of you and love you forever and ever
He’ll take care of you, my darling, for me.
