Could it be...questions for Heaven?
This week's song is a double feature:
"Could it be" by Michael Card
"Questions For Heaven" by Chris Rice
My dad has told me on many occasions that when he was younger, um MUCH younger, it was in vogue to "Never trust anyone over thirty." There's a problem with that. For him, and his peers, thirty came and went over thirty years ago at this point. It's funny. The hippies that once chanted the mantra of questioning authority are now in charge, and demand undying trust. What gives?
Remember when you were young and asked questions about everything? My middle son once pondered "I wonder what clouds taste like." What a ridiculous query. Everyone knows clouds taste like cotton candy, especially at sunset. But do you? Do you remember being so curious? Maybe that's why we have kids and grandkids. To help us remember to ask questions. Kids are masters at it.
Is it possible that the questions we ask reveal more about ourselves than the answers do? What happens when we become complacent and forget to ask questions? What if we don't ask the right questions. What if we don't even know what questions to ask? Have you ever known so little about a topic that you can't even fathom what questions to ask. Do you ask anyway?
In this day and age, is it ok to question? Is questioning something forbidden? If it is forbidden, why is it forbidden? If something smells fishy, should we just let it be? Can we question authority? Can we question our leaders? Can we question our preachers? Should we be like the Bereans in Acts 17 who searched the scriptures to make sure that Paul was preaching the truth?
So many questions. They don't all have to be serious.
Is a TV show still funny without a laugh track? What causes deja vu? Should pop-tarts be toasted or eaten cold? If exercise is suppose to be good for us, why isn't it more fun? Will we ever learn that off is as easy to turn, as on?
Here's a fun one. What questions would you ask God? Talk about intimidating. Did you plan everything or just let things work themselves out. What causes deja vu? Why don't we see angels anymore? Are miracles still real? How did Mary get pregnant? How can eternity be forever? How can you have always been and will always be? How can you love me after I all I've done? Why is there poverty and suffering and cancer? Why do some of us get long lives while others only a few years? If Satan was an angel, and he left Heaven, will others want to leave in the future? Is it ok to doubt? Will these questions even matter in Heaven?
They say time moves faster as we get older. I posit that as we get older time moves faster because we don't have as many questions to ask. Things simply are not as new and fresh as when we were younger. Perhaps we can slow time down by asking more questions. Maybe asking questions can keep us forever young.
"For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we will see face to face. Now I know in part; then I will know fully, even as I am fully known." I Cor 13:12
Stay curious folks!
Could it be
Could it be You make Your presence known
So often by Your absence?
Could it be that questions tell us more
Than answers ever do?
Could it be that You would really rather die
Than live without us?
Could it be the only answer
That means anything is You?

Questions for Heaven
Do our jokes make You laugh?
What's Your favorite cartoon?
Can You tell me what's out past the edges?
And what about UFOs, taste buds, and tornados?
Why do we dream?
Oh, and what causes de ja vu?
